An Afternoon on Mt. Titlis

Odysseys Unlimited had warned us that going up ten thousand feet to experience stunning views could be very cold. So after our morning at Engelberg Abbey, and a quick lunch, I made sure to put on multiple layers of clothing.

We had to take three gondolas up to the top of Mount Titlis. At first I was a bit nervous. But it was a calm day with no wind and so we had a smooth ride up with no bumps, except for passing under the pylons. The first one was very long and had a horizontal bit where we floated over green meadows with cows, before going up another steep slope. Then we had to get out and get onto another one, exactly the same as before, except much shorter. Then we got out and got onto the third one, which not only went up a steep slope, but rotated. Apparently it is the only one to do that in the whole world!

As we completed our journey up to 10,000 feet, the very tip-top of Mt Titlis, snow started to fall and we found ourselves in a fog bank, unable to see anything. We had to climb up four sets of stairs, because the lift is so teeny-tiny it can only take a few people. Then we finally got outside, only to find that the ground underfoot was too dangerous to walk on (due to ice.) So I forwent the icy bridge as I was worried about hurting my knees.

We descended to the first floor and joined the line for the ice cave. But the line was so long as the ticket machine was only letting a few people in at a time. So I went outside and took shots of the snow which was now tumbling down in fluffy clouds. The reason why this was so difficult ~ the three gondolas plus the icy area ~ is because the Swiss Government  is intending to build a huge mall at 10,000 feet on the top of Mount Titlis. That is what all the mess is about.
